- UFC President Dana White claims Robert Whittaker’s next fight probably won’t be for a title.
- Some fans are now calling for a number-one contender matchup against Marvin Vettori.
The UFC’s middleweight division is stacked with world-class fighters. One of the best fighters in the weight class, Robert Whittaker, is pushing hard to receive the next shot at the title. We’re now beginning to hear more information about Robert Whittaker’s next fight.
Many are surprised to hear what the UFC is planning. Whittaker is coming off two wins over elite contenders. Today, we’ll talk about what is coming next for “The Reaper.”
Here’s what we know!
Israel Adesanya’s Move to Light-Heavyweight is Now Official
In just a few years, Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya has grown to become one of the most popular fighters in mixed martial arts. He won the UFC middleweight championship back in October of 2019. He’s since gone on to defend the title on two different occasions.
Adesanya has some lofty goals. He’s been hinting at a move up in weight since entering into the UFC. Most felt this would come as a matchup against Jon Jones. To the surprise of many fans, Jones vacated his 205-pound title back in August to make the move to heavyweight.
Jan Blachowicz won the vacant light-heavyweight belt in September. Not long ago, news broke that Israel Adesanya will officially make the move to 205 pounds in order to challenge for Jan’s belt. This fight is set to headline the UFC 259 Pay-Per-View event on March 6.
This, of course, has the potential to set up the massive bout between Israel and Jon Jones. These two men have been sparring on social media over the past twelve months. Many believe this has the potential to be one of the biggest fights in the history of MMA.
The middleweight division is now being left in limbo. It’s clear that Israel will not be defending his 185-pound title anytime soon. The contenders in the weight class are now left wondering what is next for their careers.
That includes Robert Whittaker. He’s looked incredible since his loss to Israel in October of 2019. Interestingly, it doesn’t appear he’ll be fighting for the title in his next outing.
Here’s What We Know About Robert Whittaker’s Next Fight
As we mentioned earlier, the UFC middleweight division is filled with incredibly talented fighters. Israel Adesanya has proved he’s the best in the weight class. It wouldn’t be a shock to see another man claim the title sometime over the next few years, though.
Robert Whittaker seems like a man capable of dethroning Adesanya. He lost the first bout, yet seems determined to get a rematch. Rob has won two-straight fights against Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. Most felt that recent victory established Whittaker as the clear number-one contender in the weight class.
This week, Dana White was asked about Robert Whittaker’s next fight. The UFC President had high praise for the former champ. Interestingly, he seems to feel that Robert needs to fight again in order to secure a middleweight title shot.
“I don’t think he’s going to get a title shot next,” White said. “He’ll have to fight somebody else first. It’s going to depend on what happens with Israel and Jan. We’ll see what happens.”
This is likely tough news for Whittaker to hear. He’s done nothing but win lately and seems more deserving of a title shot than any other fighter in the weight class. There are a few men that would likely be more than willing to challenge Whittaker next.
Anything can happen in the UFC. Dana White’s comments go to show how complicated the title situation is right now in the middleweight division. We’ll need to wait and see who the UFC decides to match Whittaker with next.
Fans have already begun to speculate who he might be facing next. There seems to be one name that is the most likely right now.
Whittaker vs. Vettori Could Determine True Number-One Contender at Middleweight
In a normal world, Robert Whittaker would have already been announced as the next challenger to Israel Adesanya’s belt. The UFC can be strange, though, and company officials seem to have other plans. If he does need to compete one more time before earning a title shot, a fight against Marvin Vettori would make perfect sense.
Marvin has been quietly making his way up the rankings over the past few years. On December 5, he earned the biggest victory of his career by defeating Jack Hermannson via unanimous decision. This win proved that he is a title contender in the division.
After Dana White’s latest comments, many believe that Whittaker vs. Vettori could be the perfect fight to make. These two men are on a collision course towards the belt. Vettori, however, seems more interested in a matchup against fan-favorite Darren Till. You can check out his most recent Tweet about this situation below.
I still don’t fucking realize why I’m top 5 and I still don’t get the credit I deserve. Only credit I get it’s from book makers because they know better than betting against me.
No fucking problem 2021 here I come hungrier then ever
Darren Till you are next

Whittaker vs. Vettori could be the perfect fight to make in the division right now. From a stylistic point of view, this will be an amazing clash. The UFC has yet to formally announce Robert Whittaker’s next fight. There’s a chance he decides to sit on the sidelines rather than compete in another contender’s match.
It’s an interesting situation in the middleweight division. Much of what happens next depends on how the light-heavyweight title fight between Jan Blachowicz and Israel Adesanya plays out. Sites like BetOnline are already offering odds for this incredible matchup.
