- Fabricio Werdum announced he was a free agent back in July of this year.
- The former UFC champion was expected to make the move into Bellator MMA’s heavyweight division.
- New reports now claim we could see Fabricio Werdum in the PFL next year.
Fabricio Werdum is widely considered to be one of the best heavyweights in MMA history. He departed the UFC this summer and has been looking for a new promotion ever since. Reports have now surfaced that we could see Fabricio Werdum in the PFL next year.
For a time, it seemed as if “Vai Cavalo” would be making the move into Bellator. That no longer appears to be the case. Now is the perfect time to talk about what’s next for the former UFC champion.
Let’s get into it!
The PFL is Set to Return in April of 2021
The sport of MMA is in a great place right now. Throughout the 90s and early 2000s, it seemed like the UFC was the only MMA promotion operating in the US. Today, there are several different promotions with world-class talent on their roster.
Most agree that the UFC remains the biggest MMA league out there. Bellator might be the second-biggest. Over the past decade, however, the PFL has slowly grown to become a true competitor to both of these promotional companies.
For a time, the PFL was known as the World Series of Fighting. The owners were quick to sign several high-profile athletes. It’s here that fighters such as Justin Gaethje, Lance Palmer, and Kalya Harrison got their first major exposure.
Many fighters have departed this organization. Even the aforementioned Harrison, who was a face of the PFL for years, recently announced she has signed with Invicta FC. Several of the athletes here have taken issue with the PFL shutting down for the entirety of 2020.
Not long ago, news broke that the Professional Fighters League would finally return in April of 2021. The promotion is planning another exciting “season” that will conclude in June. Many fans are curious to see which fighters manage to win the big prizes next year.
It now appears we could see Fabricio Werdum making his way into the PFL sometime soon.
Here’s What Could Lead to Fabricio Werdum in the PFL
Free agency is now a major talking point in MMA. More fighters are choosing to fight out their contract to see what they are worth. Some, including former Bellator champion Rory MacDonald, have recently announced they signed with the PFL.
It now appears we could see Fabricio Werdum in the PFL sometime next year. As most fans know, Werdum is a former UFC heavyweight champion. He lost the title in 2016 and was cut from the UFC this past July.
In October, reports came out that Fabricio was interested in making the move to Bellator. He seemed particularly interested in a rematch with Fedor Emelianenko. The move to Bellator no longer seems like a possibility and “Vai Cavalo” has begun setting his sights on the PFL.
“It didn’t happen that I closed with them because Bellator wanted to do the rematch with Fedor Emelianenko in my first fight with them,” Werdum said. “I respect Fedor a lot, I can’t say that he didn’t want to fight, but there was no negotiation with Fedor, on his part he didn’t have to have this first fight… I am also aware that (manager) Ali Abdelaziz is talking to the PFL, and it may be that I will enter this championship.”
The PFL has become a much more appealing promotion in recent years. Fighters that win each annual tournament are awarded a massive $1 million prize. This is part of the reason why so many world-class fighters are now based here.
Nothing has been made official with Werdum, yet. It’s anyone’s guess where he will end up fighting next. Stay tuned for updates over the next few weeks!
There’s Still Time to Bet on Felder vs. Dos Anjos!
The UFC has likely been the busiest sports league on the planet throughout 2020. Back in May, the company made history by becoming the first US sports league to begin operating again. Since that time, UFC events have been taking place on a regular basis.
Another exciting UFC event is scheduled to take place this Saturday. The main event of this card is one that came together on very short notice. Fortunately, Felder and Dos Anjos have both made weight and the bout is on!
There’s still time to bet on all of the fights taking place tomorrow. Bovada is offering some incredible odds for each of the fighters competing. Most are interested in what takes place in the final fight of the night.
Rafael Dos Anjos had a full training camp leading into this bout. He’s a former UFC lightweight champion and only loses to the very best fighters in the world. It’s not a huge shock to see RDA enter this bout as the -190 favorite.
Paul Felder is as tough as they come. That’s apparent in the fact he made weight for this fight in just five days. With elite striking and an iron will, Paul has all the skills to get the win this weekend. Bovada lists him as the +155 underdog to do so.
