The World Series of Poker Main Event is happening this year

WSOP

While there was talk of an Autumn World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, with the prospect of second lockdowns it looked unlikely and most assumed the online WSOP at GGPoker was going to be the official series for 2020.

However, it now looks like we will at least have a $10,000 Main Event in 2020, as the WSOP have announced a unique hybrid event in partnership with WSOP.com, GGPoker and King’s Casino.

Two separate $10,000 Main Events will take place, one at WSOP.com for US players and one at GGPoker for International players. The event will be paused at the final table and played live – the US final table at the Rio in Las Vegas and the International final table at King’s Casino in Rozvadov.

The two champions will meet in Vegas

Hossein Ensan
Hossein Ensan will no longer be the reigning champion at the end of December

Both final tables will pay out as per the normal payout structure of each online tournament, but the eventual champions of each will meet in Las Vegas on December 30 to play for an additional $1 million added first prize and official title of the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event champion. In the event that the International champion is under 21 the two finalists will meet somewhere other than the US.

The event will be a freezeout and satellites will be running around the clock at GGPoker and WSOP.com. The live event will be televised on ESPN.

Dates for Domestic Tournament:

  • Day 1 – Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020
  • Day 2 – Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, Play down to 9 players
  • Final Table – Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Monday, Dec. 28, Play continues to a winner; prize monies paid

Dates for International Tournament:

  • Day 1A – Sunday, November 29, 2020
  • Day 1B – Saturday, December 5, 2020
  • Day 1C – Sunday, December 6, 2020
  • Day 2, Play down to 9 players, Monday, December 7
  • Final Table – *King’s Casino, Tuesday, Dec.15, Play down to a winner

No doubt this is a very unusual format for the World Series of Poker and a huge surprise given how close we are to the end of the year before it was announced. In particular this is once again a massive result for GGPoker who were relative unknowns a year ago and are now hosting the WSOP Main Event after a successful online WSOP.
