The $100,000 La Verdad Stakes will run as Race 8 on the Jan. 3 card at Aqueduct.
The event for 4-year-old and up fillies and mares will cover seven furlongs and include names like Sharp Starr, Mrs. Orb, and Sadie Lady among the field of six.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the La Verdad Stakes.
Betting Preview: Sharp Starr, Mrs. Orb
The heavy favorite coming in at 4/5 is Barry Schwartz’s Sharp Starr. The 4-year-old Munnings filly is trained by Horacio DePaz.
She has a career record of 3-2-2 from nine starts and earnings of $174,015.
Her most recent performance was a Dec. 5 victory in the Go for Wand Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct, where she registered a 104 Speed Figure. She also took a Nov, 7 allowance race at the track, finished seventh in the Oct. 3 George E. Mitchell black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico, and third in the Sept. 4 Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga.
Sharp Starr will break from the outside post 6 under jockey Trevor McCarthy.
She will be up against the 4/1 Mrs. Orb, owned by Ruggeri Stable, Richard Cobum Script Farm, and Michael Miceli. The 6-year-old mare from Orb is trained by Michael Miceli as well.
She is 5-8-3 from 22 career starts with earnings of $384,520.
Last time out, she took second in the Dec. 13 Bay Ridge Stakes at Aqueduct. She also finished second in the Nov. 7 Turnback the Alarm Handicap (G3) at the track, second in the Oct. 24 Empire Distaff Handicap at Belmont Park, and second in the Aug. 13 Union Avenue Handicap at Saratoga.
Mrs. Orb will break from post 5 under rider Dylan Davis.
Betting Preview: Sadie Lady
The 5/1 Sadie Lady is another one to watch. The 5-year-old mare from Freud is owned by Dennis Narlinger and trained by Rob Atras.
She has a career record of 6-0-3 from 17 starts and earnings of $266,232.
She scored a Dec. 18 allowance optional claiming race last time out at Aqueduct, registering a 104 Speed Figure. She also finished fifth in the Nov. 22 New York Stallion Series Stakes at the track and third in a July 12 allowance optional claiming race at Belmont Park.
Sadie Lady will break from post 2 under rider Kendrick Carmouoche.
The rest of the field (post, morning line) is Timely Tradition (Post 1, 6/1); Espresso Shot (Post 3, 8/1); and Prairie Fire (Post 4, J. Lezcano).
Free Betting Pick
The graded stakes-winner Sharp Starr is coming in as the heavy 4/5 favorite for good reason. She will look to start her 4-year-old campaign as she left her sophomore year, coming off her two best Beyer Speed Figures with wins going one mile at the track. She will also be cutting back in distance for the seven-furlong La Verdad, as her last six consecutive starts have been at least one mile.
