Sebastian Vettel Says He is Excited About Racing With a Mercedes Engine

  • Sebastian Vettel says he is excited to race with the vaunted Mercedes power of Aston Martin.
  • Vettel is a longsot +10000 to win the 2021 Formula One World Championship.

2020 was without doubt the toughest year of Sebastian Vettel’s Formula One Career. The former four-time world champion saw his six-year stint with Ferrari end without a world title and he finished at P13 last season, his worst ever finish in F1. But as they say, when a door closes, another one opens and for Vettel, that new chapter is with Aston Martin.

Vettel isn’t just excited about the new job. He is also excited about having the most powerful engine on the grid at his disposal. The German has never raced with a Mercedes engine before. At Red Bull, the team used Renault and in his last home, his car was powered by Ferrari. Aston Martin has been in partnership with Mercedes dating back to its Force India days. Mercedes has ruled the F1 scene since the V6 era and now Vettel has the opportunity to try it firs hand.

Said Vettel via

“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge. I can’t wait for it to finally start,” he told. Of course I’m mega-excited to see how it [Mercedes power] feels.”

Signing with Aston Martin

Informed by Ferrari earlier in the year that his services would no longer be extended after the 2020 season, the four-time F1 champion was left searching for a new job. After months of heavy speculation, it was announced in September that Sebastian Vettel signed a deal to drive for Aston Martin beginning 2021.

Vettel’s signing came days after Sergio Perez announced that he would not be returning to Racing Point ( rebranded as Aston Martin ) in 2021. Perez would end up going to Red Bull and partnering with Max Verstappen. As for Vettel, he will be paired with Lance Stroll, the son of Racing Point owner Lawrence.

With Vettel staying on the F1 grid, the 2021 Formula One World Championship will feature the three most successful drivers of the modern era with 2005 and 2006 F1 champion Fernando Alonso returning from a two-year absence to join Renault. Current champion Lewis Hamilton is expected to return to win a record-breaking seventh world title in 2021.

Perfect Fit?

It was obvious why Racing Point signed Vettel. Of all the drivers available, he was by far the biggest name. The 33-year old German is a four-time world champion who remains one of the biggest names in motorsport. He has the ideal resume to build the team around when it rebrands as Aston Martin beginning this year.

But more than the name and resume, the team is getting a known hard worker who is notorious for making hand-written notes about the car’s behavior after every driving session. Vettel has folders of those notes in his residence in Switzerland for reference. With his 14-year F1 experience, Vettel is a gold mine for Aston Martin.

Many worry about his current form but a move to a new team could reignite Vettel who is still 33-years old and who believes he still has much more to give. Aston Martin is a smaller team, with less internal politics, and more focus on racing. Add the Mercedes engine and Vettel may be worth more than the current +10000 odds he is currently pegged at Bet365 to win the 2021 F1 world title. Lewis Hamilton may be the man to beat. But Sebastian Vettel could be back as his chief challenger.
