16.30 – Bombardier British Hopped Amber Beer Handicap – 1m
A competitive opener with the vote in favour of MO HENRY who takes a significant step up in trip to one-mile. Ultimately, it’s been twenty-five runs since we last saw him in the winner’s enclosure but he’s down to a career-low mark. There are plenty of positives that will hopefully conspire him to be in the mix, including the fact that he went close here twice back in November from similar marks.
LIKE SUGAR remains a lightly-raced maiden and was a very good third at Lingfield 39 days ago. She remains open to considerable improvement and her trainer, Kevin Philippart de Foy, is two from three with runners at this track.
Selections: MO HENRY, LIKE SUGAR
Simon Crisford boasts an excellent strike-rate at this track and his runner, JACK OF TRADES, did well to finish second last time out having been held-up in a steadily-run affair at Lingfield three weeks ago. His opening handicap mark is seemingly generous, therefore, can successfully concede weight to his rivals under Jack Mitchell.
Selections: JACK OF TRADES
17.30 – Ladbrokes Where The Nation Plays Novice Stakes – 7f
An interesting event with the newcomer MALHOOB ticking plenty of boxes for the in-form Roger Varian yard. He is related to useful horses and it would be no surprise to see him make a winning start to his career and, in the process, provide Jack Mitchell with a double on the card.
CAPTAIN COOPER returned a promising second over C&D on debut and was far from disgraced in a stronger-event in a maiden next time. He remains with potential and appeals as the type to do better in this sphere and is feared most of those with experience.
Selections: MALHOOB, CAPTAIN COOPER
18.00 – Bombardier British Hopped Amber Beer Handicap – 7f
I am keen to focus on those towards the top of the handicap in this tricky event. Firstly, CONFRONTATIONAL, who has slipped to a lenient mark and is 7Ib below his last winning mark. He’s often plied his trade at a higher-level and is no forlorn hope to reach the frame at double-figure odds.
NORDIC FIRE hasn’t won for two-years, but he’s been knocking on the door of late to suggest his turn might be near. From an unchanged mark since finishing a creditable second at Southwell four days ago, he has solid each-way credentials.
Of the rest, the hat-trick seeker DEOLALI can’t be ruled out having produced a career-best over C&D 24 days ago and is clearly thriving at present.
Selections: CONFRONTATIONAL, NORDIC FIRE, DEOLALI
CARIBBEAN SUNSET could only finish fourth in a minor event at Kempton when last seen, but was impressive on debut and makes his handicap debut here from a lenient-looking mark. Understandably, he needs to improve to win this event, but he should be thereabouts at the very least.
Richard Fahey’s ELUSIVE TREAT was far too superior to his rivals at Kempton 25 days ago when gaining a career-best success and should have more to offer from only a 5Ib higher mark.
Selections: CARIBBEAN SUNSET, ELUSIVE TREAT
19.00 – Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap – 6f
Anthony Brittain, coincidentally, runs a couple in this wide-open event with marginal preference for TATHMEEN. He’s a five-time course-and-distance winner and was unfortunate to be caught further back than ideal when fourth here last week. He’s dangerous to dismiss in the expectation of a smoother passage from an ideal draw.
GLENAMOY LAD is another course-specialist to consider, having hit the frame twice at this track earlier in 2020 in class-four events from marks of 87 and 86. Interestingly, Jennie Candlish seven-year-old is down to a career-low mark of 67 and that ought to see him heavily involved with the combination of a significant drop down in grade to help.
Selections: TATHMEEN, GLENAMOY LAD
