Kansas City Chiefs at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds & Picks: Chiefs Favored

  • BetOnline’s opening Super Bowl odds have the Chiefs as 3.5-point favorites over Tampa Bay
  • Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes is the first Super Bowl matchup between quarterbacks that won the last two championships
  • Kansas City is beat up on the offensive line after losing starting LT Eric Fisher for the year

Kansas City can become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005, a team quarterbacked by none other than Tom Brady, who will be making his 10th career appearance in the big game on Sunday, February 7th when his Buccaneers host Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Let’s take a look at the opening spread and total for Super Bowl 55 before making some early predictions. As always, check out our NFL betting guide and Super Bowl Betting guide if you need winning advice on how to wager on football.

The Chiefs opened up as 3.5-point favorites over the Buccaneers, who will become the first team in NFL history to host a Super Bowl. Kansas City manhandled the Bills 38-24 on Sunday night, seemingly scoring at will as they have all season. Meanwhile, a week after sending Drew Brees into retirement, Tom Brady vanquished another all-time QB with only one ring, landing a 31-26 upset over Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

Mahomes and Brady have split their four career games against one another. Kansas City scored a 27-24 road victory over Tampa Bay in a Week 11 contest that wasn’t nearly as close as the score would indicate, while the 43-year-old living legend won the last playoff matchup between the two quarterbacks – a 37-31 triumph in the 2019 AFC Championship Game that preceded his sixth-career title as a member of the Patriots.

Brady also defeated Andy Reid and the Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl 39, so Big Red will too be out for revenge.

Chiefs’ left tackle Eric Fisher suffered an Achilles injury in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game and will likely be unavailable for the Super Bowl. With their other starting offensive tackle, Mitchell Schwartz, already on injured reserve with a back injury, Kansas City could have trouble protecting Mahomes against a fearsome Bucs front that sacked Rodgers five times on Sunday.

Additionally, Tampa Bay will likely have rookie safety Antoine Winfield Jr. back in the lineup in two weeks, providing a much-needed boost to their secondary. Considering Steve Spagnuolo’s defense also looked feisty in sacking Josh Allen four times, we recommend grabbing the UNDER on the 56.5 game total offered at BetOnline.

While the impulse is always to bet on Mahomes, keep in mind that Kansas City was just 7-8 against the spread in the 15 regular-season games the quarterback started, as well as 1-1 in the postseason. With the potential return of Antonio Brown, Tampa Bay could be fully healthy while playing at home against a beat-up Chiefs club that has become over-reliant on the talents of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.
