Joe Burrow’s Impressive Rookie Season Is Over After Leg Injury

Bengals Joe Burrow Injury

  • Cincinnati Bengals’ rookie quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a serious leg injury against the Washington Football Team on Sunday.
  • The injury prematurely ends one of the best seasons ever by a rookie NFL quarterback.
  • The Bengals head to next weekend’s game against the New York Giants as +4.5 underdogs.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow is done for the season. Burrow left the Bengals’ Sunday game against the Washington Football Team after suffering a serious leg injury. He left the game and was carted off the field.

As of now, it has been ruled as an ACL injury although an MRI on Monday could show more damage, as the video shows. What is clear though that Burrow’s impressive rookie season is over as the quarterback himself Tweeted:

One of the Best Seasons by a Rookie QB

Joe Burrow was having one of the best seasons ever by a rookie quarterback in the NFL. He was paced to become the first rookie in NFL history to have six 300-yard passing games in his first 10 NFL games. He was 22-34 for 203 yards in the third quarter against Washington when the injury happened.

The 23-year ranks 4th in NFL history for the most passing yards by a player in his first 10 NFL games. Including his total from Sunday’s game, Burrow had a total of 2,688 passing yards. At the halfway mark of the season Burrow was one pace to break Andrew Luck’s rookie record for most passing yards at 4,374. He ranked second behind Justin Herbert in last week’s odds to win the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year at +170 at BetOnline.ag.

Burrow led the Tigers to the 2019 College Football Playoff championship and won the Heisman Trophy. The Bengals drafted him first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft with the hopes of making him their franchise quarterback. It was clear from Day 1 that Cincinnati would hand him the keys to the offense as they released veteran QB Andy Dalton and did not add a another veteran QB in Cincinnati’s 53-man lineup.

Inability To Protect the Quarterback

Burrow was hurt after throwing a pass intended for Cincinnati receiver Tyler Boyd. Washington defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Montrez hit Burrow from opposite sides. His left leg, which was planted, took a heavy hit. Burrow immediately grabbed his left knee area when he fell to the ground. He eventually was able to stand up but was unable to put weight on his left leg before he was carted off the field.

The Bengals were up 9-7 at the time of Burrow’s injury. But a stunned and deflated team could not muster enough fight in the second half to hold on to the lead. Ryan Finley took over for Burrow but he was immediately sacked four times and picked-off once. Washington then racked up 13 straight points to win the game 20-9.

Their inability to protect their quarterback is one of the biggest weaknesses of this Cincinnati squad, whose offensive line has been shuffled around throughout the year. According to ESPN’s NFL Next Gen Stats, The Bengals rank 28th in the league in pass block win rate. But Bengals coach Zac Taylor defended the offensive line, saying that they had done a great job in the last couple of weeks and noted that the hit on Burrow came after he threw the ball.

+4.5 Betting Underdogs Against The Giants

Cincinnati has missed the playoffs in each of the last four seasons after making six wild card appearances in the previous seven seasons. The Bengals have not won a playoff game since defeating the Houston Oilers 41-14 in a Wild Card playoff game in 1990

The Bengals are 2-7 SU on the season and they will head to the Paul Brown Stadium to take on the equally struggling New York Giants on November 30, 2020. Without Burrow, Cincinnati has opened as a +4.5 points spread favorite against New York and a +185 underdog at the money line of BetOnline.ag

With Burrow out, the Bengals only have one quarterback on their team and that is Ryan Finley. Finley was Cincinnati’s 104th pick overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. He appeared in three games last season, completing 41 of 87 passes for 474 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Finley took over after Burrow got hurt and he threw for 30 yards with one interception on 3 of 10 passing as the Bengals lost 20-9 to Washington.
