The Teams

Iowa State (8-3)

The Iowa State Cyclones are stepping into this bowl fresh off of a 27-21 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners for the Big 12 championship. They were casted as five point dogs in most markets and showed that they were not ready for the challenge as they fell behind 17-0 early on.

However, they were determined to play to their potential and stormed back to an almost late game winning drive that eventually ended with an interception. More than enough frustration for the day as turnovers were a big key.

Iowa State had a respectable season nonetheless, as they were 8-3 straight up with betting opportunities at 6-5 against the spread and 4-7 under the total. Iowa State averaged 32.8 points per game while allowing 21.8.

Key players to watch are quarterback Brock Purdy and Breece Hall. Hall’s totals for running back are 1436 yards rushing this season with an average of 5.9 yards per rush and 19 touchdowns.

Oregon (4-2)

The Oregon Ducks are looking to end the season on a higher note than their previous one. They recently knocked off a 13th ranked USC Trojans team that not a lot of people saw coming. They took that game 31-24 to win the Pac-12 championship.

Oregon was not even supposed to play in this game, but due to the Washington Huskies dropping out due to the pandemic, they were in line to play. As a result, they turned into Pac 12 champions overnight.

Oregon has a 4-2 straight up record and within betting opportunities they are 3-3 against the spread and 3-3 on totals. Oregon has averaged 33.7 points per game while giving up 27.3. With those averages, it leaves little room for error on both sides.

The Cyclones, in addition to head coach Matt Campbell, were outright disgusted with the performance they put on against Oklahoma. They felt like they could have won that game to claim the Big 12 championship.

Oregon has somewhat stumbled into this game, especially after the USC matchup, but credit is due for them. The odds are potentially giving them too much credit here.

Overall, Iowa State is the better team and they will need to show up and play like a Big 12 champion contender would have played. Look for them to make up for their recent loss.
