Disney+ Hotstar, Jio TV To Stream Poker Sports League

Poker Sports League (PSL) is in talks with various streaming platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, Voot, Jio TV and MX Player for the tournament’s streaming rights. These platforms want to bank on the growing popularity of online poker tournaments in India.

PSL’s third season is soon to kick-off on 16th January after the live on-ground event was cancelled due to the raging pandemic. As reported by Mint, PSL will this time host an online event with matches spread across two months with 2-3 matches per week, instead of a 5-day on-ground event.

Amit Burman, co-founder of Mind Sports League, the company that organizes the tournament, said,

“We are in talks with multiple OTT (over-the-top) platforms such as Disney+ Hotstar, Jio TV and Zee5. The sponsorship partner will be announced sometime next week.”

Pranav Bagai, CEO and co-founder of Mind Sports League added that,

“The bulk of our audiences are under 35 years of age who are digital natives and do not spend the majority of their time consuming content on television. It is a clear decision based on where our audiences are.”

Amit Burman affirmed that PSL have tested the production capability of Hashtag Poker for hosting the event by organizing a virtual charity event on the platform. PSL’s initial two seasons were broadcasted on Discovery Communications India’s DSPORTS channel. This time, it was chosen to stream the competition on digital streaming platforms because of the rise and popularity of such streaming platforms, that have pulled in 4-5 million paying subscribers in the previous few months according to industry specialists.

The online qualifiers for the third season of PSL are in progress till November 22, to choose a total of 80 players for eight teams. The owners of the groups will get one month to set up their groups, and a bootcamp will be coordinated in the principal seven day stretch of January. Shoot kits will be shipped off to all the chosen players to record their sound and video. The poker competition will have a total prize pool of Rs. 1.8 Crores.
