Coming Soon: Live! Casino Philadelphia to Open in January, Pending Approvals

Live! Casino Philadelphia had hoped to open before the start of 2021. But COVID-19 and city and state health officials had other plans.

According to workers at the new casino site, a Jan. 20 opening for the destination casino in the Stadium District of Philadelphia is planned. Both Philadelphia and Pennsylvania approved the resumption of live casino play starting Monday, Jan. 4.

PA gaming official confirms Jan. 20 as the target date

Doug Harbach of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, which approves pre-opening testing and the final opening, confirmed the 20th is the date Live! submitted as a target. He added though the date is not yet final.

According to Harbach:

“They are looking for an opening date as described to you. If they can finish with approvals from us (and any they need from the city) and hit that date, there would be a couple test nights prior to that date, but we have not been able to finalize the exact dates yet.”

Carmen Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for Live! said only, “At this exact moment, I do not have a date to give you.”

Live! Casino Philadelphia is putting on the finishing touches

The casino has been hiring since early November, and a sister Live! Casino property opened near Pittsburgh in late November.

The company already has an online casino up and running.

FanDuel will run Live!’s retail sportsbook. A huge sign recently went up outside as a reminder. And the Live! opening should mean a new 29-seat poker room.

Workers were busily applying outside finishing touches on Monday at one entrance to the Philly property.

Signs have gone up recently, including a massive changeable one at the corner of South Darien St. and Packer Ave.

The casino interior is partially visible and looks ready for action.

In-depth preview of Live! Casino Philadelphia available

PlayPennsylvania recently published an extensive three-part preview series on the project.

The first part looks at the history of the site, the project and the developer – The Cordish Companies of Baltimore.

The Live! casino and entertainment complex adjoins the Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, and an existing Cordish/Comcast-Spectacor development, an entertainment and dining center known as Xfinity Live!

The new project shakes up the Philly region’s brick-and-mortar gaming market, which is also explored in Part 1. An extensive timeline is also included in the first installment.

Part 2 delves into other casinos’ revenue figures in the region and plans for cross-promotions with sports and tourism for Live!

And Part 3 examines how Live! hopes to fit into the city and neighborhood while also marketing itself as a destination casino.
